The Wolf King
by Lauren Palphreyman
I came for the romantasy. I stayed for the world… and the growling.
I listened to The Wolf King as an audiobook, and it was my first romantasy with duet narration.
Apparently, I had been missing out.
Because that male voice? The growling rrrrrr alone was enough to send shivers down my spine. And yes, this is absolutely relevant information for this review.
But here’s the thing: if The Wolf King had been nothing more than a sexy voice and some romantic tension, I probably wouldn’t still be thinking about it.
I genuinely liked the story.
There is an actual world to get lost in, with its own rules, conflicts, danger and intrigue. The romance is a huge part of the fun — obviously — but it never felt like the book had nothing else to offer once you took the chemistry away.
And that’s something I really appreciate in romantasy (at least, I know it now). Give me the tension, the attraction, the please just touch each other already frustration. But I also want to care about what happens when nobody is flirting.
The Wolf King gave me both.
Would I have enjoyed it as much if I’d simply read it? Probably.
Would I recommend doing that when the audiobook exists? Absolutely fucking not.
Listen to it. You’ll thank me later 😉
My rating: ★★★★★
Audiobook experience: ★★★★★ + one completely unnecessary extra star for the rrrrrr.
